Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where can I find the Home Daily Bible Readings for each week?
A: The old “Home Daily Bible Readings” (for KJV users) or “Daily Bible Readings” (for NIV® users) are renamed “This Quarter in the Word” beginning with the 2010–2011 curriculum year. You can find the readings for an entire quarter grouped together on two back-to-back pages in the introductory matter for each quarter. This new format allows you to detach the page, fold it, and keep it in your Bible for easy reference.
Q: Where can I find the reproducible student activity pages mentioned on the “Involvement Learning” page of my teacher book?
A: Just click here: http://standardlesson.com/resources/reproducible-student-activity-pages/
Q: Can I read the Standard Lesson Commentary® on my Kindle or i-Pad?
A: Yes! To purchase the Standard Lesson Commentary® in the Kindle format, click on either KJV Kindle or NIV® Kindle. For the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, and on your computer with iTunes, click either KJV iPad or NIV® iPad.
Q: How do I get the Logos edition of the Standard Lesson eCommentary?
A: Logos Bible Software makes the Logos edition of the Standard Lesson Commentary® available as a download from their website. Go to www.logos.com and search for “Standard Lesson Commentary.” You’ll find both the current and previous editions of the commentary available there.
Q: Why can’t I get the Logos edition of the Standard Lesson eCommentary along with a print copy of the Standard Lesson Commentary®?
A: Logos Bible Software (www.logos.com) has decided to offer its products in a “download only” format. Thus Standard Publishing is unable to offer the Standard Lesson Commentary with a bound-in Logos CD.
Q: Will The NIV Standard Lesson Commentary® adopt the newest NIV® revision (2011)? If so, why?
A: The publishers of the New International Version® have the legal right to license its use and/or limit its use, so we have to go by what they decide. And they have determined that publishers who use the NIV® in their materials must use the 2011 edition. So we are obligated to use that edition. Beginning with the fall quarter of 2012, we will be using the 2011 edition of the NIV®.
That’s a good news-bad news proposition. Many people are concerned about the “gender-neutrality” issue in the new NIV®. It’s true that the newest edition is more gender-neutral than the 1984 NIV®, but not quite so much as the TNIV®. (The TNIV® is being discontinued, as is the 1984 NIV®, in place of the newest NIV® edition.) But whatever one’s view of that issue, it’s not the only change that was made. In reviewing the newest edition, we have found several improvements in the translation over the older one. For example, the Greek word sarx is more consistently rendered “flesh,” as it should be, in the new edition. Paul’s contrast of flesh and spirit, muddied by the old NIV® translation, is much clearer now.
Finally, nothing about the way we comment on the text has changed. We have not changed our editorial policies to “match” the NIV® or any other source. Where we believe the gender-neutral language actually misrepresents the text, we will say so. Thus, while we’ll be using the newest NIV®, you can continue to trust Standard Publishing to be true to the Bible and to give you the kind of faithful exposition that you have come to expect.
Q: Is Standard Publishing considering adding any new lesson commentaries based on additional Bible translations such as the NKJV or the ESV?
A: We are always looking for ways to expand our line of products, and this is one way we have considered several times. We have considered editions based on the NKJV, the NLT, the NASB, and the ESV. Unfortunately, none of these versions has risen to the kind of prominence that we feel would make it worth creating a Standard Lesson Commentary® based on that. In the world of print publishing, a certain number of copies is required to make the printing cost effective, and right now we do not believe there is enough support to justify any of these editions.
Q: Can I listen to the Standard Lesson Commentary® on a CD?
A: Yes! For information about the KJV Standard Lesson Commentary® on Audio, click here: http://standardlesson.com/what-you-get/kjv-slc-on-audio/.
Q: Why is the Audio SLC available only in the KJV edition?
A: The issue here is copyright. The King James Version of the Bible is in the public domain, so any publisher can create products based on it without paying a royalty to anyone. But newer translations are protected by copyright, and use of them must be licensed by the copyright holders. This almost always involves the payment of some kind of royalty or specified fee. Right now we cannot sell enough audio editions of the NIV Standard Lesson Commentary® to make it cost effective to incur the charges for the use of the New International Version®.
Q: Why are there NIV® quotations on my KJV Adult Resources visuals?
A: We produce only one edition of Adult Resources, and users of both KJV and NIV® curriculum make use of it. So most of the time we make the caption something that works equally well for both versions. Perhaps we’ll find a phrase that reads the same in both versions and use that for the caption. Or we may use a paraphrase or summary of the text. But sometimes we feel we really need to quote the Scripture. When that happens, we more often use the KJV since more KJV users buy this product. But we still use the NIV® occasionally since users of both versions are using these visuals.

I am teaching the January 23 adult Bible lesson this week and was told there was either a Power Point or Keynote (Mac) material available from Standard. I have made my own Keynote material in the past. This time I am choosing to use an overhead projector so I can write symbols on the scriptures so as to better understand the persons speaking. I am just checking with you to see if you have the outline and/or the scriptures for this lesson that you could e-mail me. I would from that then make transparencies.
Just checking to see what’s available. Thanks for your attention to this request.
Sincerely,
Janice Kaiser

I tried to download your free reproducible page from May 1, 2011 lesson. I submitted my name and address, etc. information but still I was unsuccessful. Is this offer not valid anymore?
Comment by Jewel Gines on April 30, 2011 at 10:36 am
We apologize for any inconvenience, Jewel. We do not require user information to access our reproducible student pages, so perhaps you were downloading the free sample lesson. Please click Resources in the upper-right area and then Reproducible Student Pages (third item on that page). We offer these PDFs by quarter, so please download the Spring Quarter 2011 file.

Where can I acquire a reproductive copy of the Visual for Lesson 7 (Judges of Israel)
Comment by Cynthia Lombard on July 16, 2011 at 3:01 pm
Q: Why were the discussion questions on the Let’s Talk It Over page (KJV users) removed?
A: These discussion questions were not removed, but merely relocated. For increased convenience, the questions now occur at appropriate points within the commentary proper. This eliminates the distraction of flipping back and forth between the commentary and the old Let’s Talk It Over page.
My question
GO BACK and take another look at this section in the past books. It offer a lot more information and I really enjoyed reading it. I the questions were relocated but they do no give the answer the way they were before, I really learned a lot from this section, can you really consider putting it back in again
Comment by Kimberly Elder on July 16, 2011 at 8:32 pm
Thanks for asking, Cynthia! You can access reproducible visuals in the Standard Lesson eCommentary, the quarterly Adult Resources, or the Standard Lesson Map/Chart download.

Thanks for sharing your opinion, Kimberly. Please read the question and answer directly below the one you commented on (“What happened to the answers for the discussion questions (KJV users)?”) Does that help explain our decision?
The important thing to note is that the nature of the questions has changed from years ago. These are not questions that have pat answers. They are mostly application questions that are very dynamic. How one person applies these issues in his or her setting can vary widely from how another does. If we gave an “answer,” it would be relevant to some but not others, but it would cut off the discussion. The “Talking Points” are designed to keep the discussion going in any setting.

I bought the last copy of the Commentary without the CD that contains the Power Point lessons. How can I get a copy of the Power Point lessions — without paying $2 / week?
Comment by Pat Gimmi on July 25, 2011 at 5:15 am
Thanks for asking, Pat. The Standard Lesson eCommentary is the most economical way to get all the PowerPoint files – even if you only buy it just for those files. Otherwise we offer the quarterly Adult Resources pack (currently $16.49 per quarter), and the fall quarter pack (item 020019211) is here.

I tried to reach you when I first purchased my KJV e-commentary this month. My discovery was that the art / photos in this 2011-2012 edition has NIV scriptures. Would you please tell me why that is?
Comment by Shawn on August 30, 2011 at 11:06 am
Thanks for contacting us about our product, Shawn. I’ll check into this for you, and I can tell you that our eCommentary CDs have both KJV as well as NIV® Commentaries on them. Are you looking at the KJV part or the NIV?
Comment by Jim on August 31, 2011 at 12:18 pm
I filled out and submitted the form to be able to down-load items. Do you sell those names? You must because I can’t down-load any thing…… I can’t order anything. A part of your web site said that you could down-load the adult material. I was wanting to do that.
After 8 years using the Standard Material, I guess I’ll have to go and pick up whatever the book store has left. I will miss the cd’s that came with your lesson commentaries.

Jim, I purchased the KJV e-commentaries. The cdrom loaded Bible Explorer software and I clicked on the KJV commentary icon. There happens to be a few lessons which have Visuals with NIV scripture.
As an example: page 9 of “Making Right Choices” and you can email me personally if you would like to the email above and I can provide addtional lessons.
Thank you.
Comment by Shawn on September 7, 2011 at 12:05 pm
I apologize for the issue, Myrle! We NEVER sell or exchange any of our contacts’ information; we only use it to contact you to discuss your curriculum and church resources needs. Also, we still offer the Standard Lesson eCommentary CD! The CDs are bound inside printed volumes of the KJV (item 020510211) and NIV® (item 020520211), available at your local Christian bookstore and at http://www.standardpub.com.

Where are questions and answers on the Sunday school lessons for class discussion?
Comment by Earnest Freeman on January 29, 2012 at 8:12 am
Pls I live in Africa and we use the SLC for Sunday school.
Not many can afford the SLC:
1. Pls could you confirm that the NIV Bible Student is a shorter version of the SLC
2. Is it cheaper.
3.Pls confirm that we only need to purchase the SLC for teachers and students can have the NIV Bible Student.
I would appreciate if i am emailed this answer.
